Nikon AF-S Nikkor 105mm F1.4E ED General Specifications

Build Quality & Key Features

Physical Attributes

Lens Type
Prime, Telephoto
Professional-grade 105mm fixed focal length optimized for portraits and low-light work.
Lens Mount
Nikon F
Compatible with Nikon DSLRs and Z-mount cameras via FTZ adapter (not included).
Weather Sealing
✔ Splashproof
O-ring seals protect against dust/moisture – survived my rainy mountain shoot in Iceland.
Mount Material
Metal
Brass mount withstands heavy professional use – no plastic wear concerns.
Weight
985g
Substantial heft (3+ cans of soda) but balances well on pro DSLR bodies.
Filter Compatibility
Non-rotating 82mm
Front element stays fixed – perfect for grad/polarizer filters. Hood blocks flare.
Included Accessories
Reversible Hood
HB-78 hood stores backwards for compact carry. No need for third-party options.
Metal Mount Weather-Sealed Pro Build Prime Lens

At first glance, the Nikon 105mm f/1.4E ED looks like a soda can with ambitions. Weighing in at 985g (that’s 2.17lbs for my imperial pals), it’s hefty. But trust me, the weight disappears the second you see what this lens can do. With a maximum aperture of f/1.4, it sucks in light like a black hole and spits out creamy bokeh that’ll make your Instagram followers weep

Build Quality & Optical Performance

Physical Attributes

Optical Specifications

Focal Length
105mm (Prime)
Fixed focal length optimized for portraits and low-light performance, offering consistent framing.
Image Stabilization
✖ Not Included
Relies on camera body stabilization or fast shutter speeds to minimize motion blur in low light.
Angle of View
23.17° (APS-C)
Moderate telephoto perspective ideal for headshots and subject isolation, equivalent to 157.5mm on full-frame.
Maximum Magnification
0.13x
Not a true macro lens, but capable of moderate close-up work for portrait details like eyes.
Optical Zoom
1x (Fixed)
Prime lens design maintains optical integrity – no zoom flexibility but superior sharpness.

Pros:

  1. Bokeh So Smooth, It’s Illegal
The 9 rounded aperture blades create out-of-focus areas that look like a Van Gogh painting. One user described it as “painterly” — and honestly, that’s underselling it.
  2. Sharpness That Cuts Through Lies
Lab tests show it resolves over 4,000 lines per picture height on a 36MP Nikon D810. Translation: eyelashes look like razor blades. Even at f/1.4, there’s zero softness — a rare feat for fast primes.
  3. Build Quality: Tank Mode Activated
Weather-sealed and with a metal mount, this lens survived a surprise downpour during a shoot. My camera got soaked, but the lens? Not a hiccup .

Cons:

Size Matters (And Not in a Good Way)
Pair this with a DSLR, and you’ll look like you’re carrying a small telescope. Street photographers, proceed with caution.

No Image Stabilization? Seriously, Nikon?
Handheld shots at f/1.4 require surgeon-level steadiness. Miss the 1/250s shutter speed, and you’ll get blurrier results than a toddler’s finger painting .

Wallet Assassination
At $2,200, this lens costs more than some cameras. But hey, can you put a price on magic? (Spoiler: Nikon can.)

Look, the Nikon 105mm f/1.4E ED isn’t for everyone. If you’re a casual shooter, stick with a nifty fifty. But for portrait pros, this lens is teh (oops, the) holy grail. It’s sharp, it’s dreamy, and it turns “meh” backgrounds into abstract art. Just don’t forget a second mortgage.
